John Deere combine harvesting corn at Soules Family Farms

THE OPERATION

Soules Family Farms is a diversified row crop and livestock operation in Northeast Iowa. We run corn-soybean rotations and a hog enterprise on ground that has been in the family for over a century. Our approach is straightforward: use the best available technology, take care of the soil, and run an operation that produces results year after year.

CORN PRODUCTION

Corn is the anchor of our row crop operation. We plant on rich Northeast Iowa prairie soil using GPS-guided equipment and variable-rate seeding technology. Every field gets a prescription based on soil samples, yield data, and satellite imagery.

We scout fields throughout the growing season, monitoring for pest pressure, nutrient deficiency, and disease. Harvest runs on John Deere equipment, and our grain moves into feed and ethanol markets.

SOYBEAN PRODUCTION

Soybeans rotate with corn to build soil health, break pest cycles, and fix nitrogen back into the ground. It is one of the smartest agronomic decisions a Midwest farmer can make, and it has been a core part of our operation for decades.

We select varieties based on maturity group, disease resistance package, and yield potential for our specific soil types. Planting windows, row spacing, and population rates are dialed in to push yields on every acre we touch.

HOG PRODUCTION

Our hog operation adds a third revenue stream and complements the row crop side of the business. Livestock diversification is a proven strategy for managing risk in agriculture, and it has been part of the Soules operation for generations.

We take animal husbandry seriously. Clean facilities, proper nutrition, and responsible management are the baseline, not the exception. The hog enterprise also creates a market for our own grain, keeping more value on the farm.

TECHNOLOGY & APPROACH

PRECISION AG

GPS-guided auto-steer, variable-rate application, yield mapping, and satellite imagery. We use data to make decisions, not guesses.

SOIL HEALTH

Regular soil sampling, nutrient management plans, and crop rotation designed to build organic matter and protect the long-term productivity of our ground.

DATA-DRIVEN

Yield monitors, field-by-field profitability analysis, and agronomic record-keeping. Every season teaches us something if we are paying attention.

SUSTAINABILITY

Conservation practices, responsible input use, and a commitment to leaving this ground in better shape than we found it. Stewardship is not optional.
